DESCRIPTION:Susan will be at a book festival in Mankato all day on Saturday\, October 5\, 2019\, @ the Loose Moose Saloon & Conference Center. \nCheck out the official website for the Deep Valley Book Festival here: https://www.deepvalleybookfestival.com \nCome down and discuss anything worldbuilding. Purchase a book (or the whole series) or bring one in for signing! I thoroughly love to talk about anything story-related. If you peruse my blog\, you’ll see that worldbuilding is one of my special fancies. Start talking about social science or social stratification\, and I’ll simply start drooling\, then babbling. \nThe feared question: “What is your book about?”\nThis will be Susan’s third author appearance and signing. Appearing in public and talking to readers is a really fun\, yet daunting experience. It’s easy for an author to sit at a keyboard and pour out a story\, it’s a bit more challenging to have that story torn apart by critiquers or editors\, but when someone asks the author what his or her book is about\, there’s an entirely different reaction. It usually goes something like this: \nReader: “So\, Author\, tell me about your book.” \nAuthor: “Uh…It’s about…um…well…there’s this girl…” \nReader: Raises an eyebrow\, smiles\, nods\, and pretends to read the back of the book for another minute. \nI and other authors have begun practicing the answer to this question. The goal is to be honest and paint a picture of the novel that entices the reader. You don’t want to say exactly what’s on the back cover\, but you want to give the reader (or potential reader) a sense of the fantastic journey that awaits as she opens the pages and sits down to dive into another world. \nThat being said\, my book is about how a modern woman would deal with being introduced into a fantastical situation. It’s how a natural cynic responds to the supposed impossibilities that surround an alternate dimension. I have many friends who claim to be non-fantasy readers because they simply cannot relate to the characters in fantasy. This was my endeavor to provide a relatable character in a fantasy world. \nWhy we (authors) go to these events…\nBeing very honest\, book festivals aren’t a money-making adventure for an author. It is the networking and connecting with readers and other story-lovers that makes these events worthwhile. So\, don’t be afraid of the scary authors behind the tables trying to sell you a book.
