Today. This event marks the start of something for me. I’ve spent a lot of time quietly plotting, writing, and revising. In 2021, I have big release plans. You may notice that I’ve revamped my website a bit to align with some of my upcoming releases. The Muse of Wynter one is just the first.
This story is a fairy tale. It is rich with personification and themes. It’s a quick read and it’s lyrical, thus the name. I normally like to stick close to the main character in storytelling. However, in this one, I practiced a distant voice that’s evocative in other ways. The Muse in this story narrates a tale that speaks of so many of life’s changes. I’ve revised it a number of times, and each time I did, tears welled in my eyes.
If you’ve seen my posts on Instagram, I’ve been teasing out the themes with quotes from some well-known authors or historical figures.
To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake is to stand out in the cold.”
Aristotle
I am not normally a fan of winter or cold things in general, but there truly is so much to be appreciated in the cycles the cold brings.
They who sing through the summer must dance in the winter.
An Italian Proverb
This one, I believed appropriate, because my family has a good deal of Italian blood. Given that this little book speaks to family found, this was an homage to my own family.
Nothing burns like the cold.
George R.R. Martin
Ah, yes, something from Game of Thrones. This story is nothing of the sort, but I do mention how Frost or Snow might burn.
Honor old age. Winter has beautiful stories left to tell.
Angie Welland-Crosby
How this one pulls on my heart strings! Cycles of life are something to behold. I dare say that all who live long enough will experience the emotion brought with these cycles.
And finally…
Melancholy were the sounds on a winter’s night.
Virginia Woolf, Jacob’s Room
This one, I will leave you to read and see how it applies.
Assigned the duty by the High Priestess, Nellwyn watches over the babe born to winter’s storm.
Motherless, the child Wynter grows in a small home by the river with her adoring father. She learns to make her crystalline instrument sing under the tutelage of Maestro, and she adores her found family and siblings and the small friend who only she can see. In the summer of her youth, Wynter ages and learns to love the boy Sumor.
But a chill lingers in the air, calling to her, asking her to draw her bow across the strings and lift Song to the skies. ‘Tis a lure Wynter can only resist for a time.
Come and listen to how the seasons change.
