Book Review: Crossed

June 6, 2022/Book Reviews

by Lynn Rush

Super-Cute. Super-Swoonworthy

I read this book in a day. Simply devoured it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 rounded up to 5 for where there can only be 5 stars.

Loved the characters Trinity and Jayden. Both are well-drawn.

The plot is thoroughly engaging. Amnesia trope for romance. A little of a fallen angel feel, but it’s another race/realm. Fast paced. Could not put it down.

Lots to love. Complete story arc with a hook for the next book in the series.

Plot & Characters

The plot in this novel is like an engine, it just keeps cranking up the tension between the characters and the greater conflict between the realms.

Favorite Quote(s)

To be honest, I’m sure there are some nice turns of phrase in this book. However, I was really so engaged in wanting to know what happened next that I wasn’t stopping to take notes.

Romance Elements

Swoonworthiness

Amazing. There is a bit of insta-love, but it’s also done for a good reason. I also loved the innocence and/or naivety about how Trinity addressed the relationship. Also, it was so healing for Jayden, it just made me go “awww” several times.

Heat

There are some definite interludes that start to light a fire. Some of the make-out scenes made me wonder if we would be getting a bit too old to call this YA. It’s equivalent to the scenes in Twilight. Everything happens off screen / behind closed doors when it does happen.

Fantasy Elements

Worldbuilding

For this, I think most of it will happen in book 2 or later if Lynn decides to take the reader back to Trinity’s realm. Otherwise, it’s earth-based, Minnesota.

Loved the “up north” reference.

Magic & Magic Systems

There’s only a little, and it has to do with the bonding bracelet Trinity wears. That’s pretty cool though, and I think it comes from the traditions of handfasting back in the day. I recently read another series that had a similar concept: The Once and Future Queen series.

Writing & Narration

All I can say about this is that it’s beautiful in its simplicity. The writing is straightforward. It shows Trinity’s ignorance about the new world in a fun and innocent way. And it’s a perfect voice for this story. I would worry that fancy writing here would obscure the story rather than add to it.

Synopsis

For fans of Blindspot and I Am Number Four

She had to lose her memory to find her soul

Pushed through a splice between two parallel Realms, Trinity Dawkins lands in the middle of a busy Minnesota street, literally. The trauma leaves her blind and amnesia-stricken, but she soon finds sanctuary in the strong arms of struggling artist, Jayden Brown.

He’s intrigued by her quirky behavior, voracious appetite, and her incessant curiosity about common things like cars, French fries, and cell phones. But his tolerance is tested when wings unexpectedly burst from her back.

Even worse, the otherworldly enemies she fled make their way to Earth, determined to capture her. Trinity and Jayden are thrown into a battle bound by rules they don’t understand and may not survive.
