Book Review: Scorned: Valkyrie Academy Dragon Alliance #3

July 8, 2022/Book Reviews

by Katrina Cope

And… we have a dragon battle

Scorned: Valkyrie Academy Dragon Alliance #3 continues with the adventure of Kara and her dragon Elan. In the third episode, the plot seems to move a bit slower through chapter 6, but then it happens…

THE DRAGON BATTLE.

Of course that turns up the tension, but I’m rating this one slightly lower just for the slightly slower pacing.

⭐⭐⭐⭐💫– on the MG to YA lit scale.

This story took the reader away from the main academy for most of the book, but it really expanded on the culture of the dragons.

Plot & Characters

In book 3, we get to learn about Elan’s family and the dragon culture. Fertility is mentioned, but it stays pretty female-sided. This is my adult brain questioning, but how exactly do the eggs get fertilized? Does the mother have a mate? This point’s not covered. Probably okay given the context of this book, but I wondered.

I did like that they also address the molting thing in a way that benefits Kara. Well done on the culture building there.

I didn’t find any to highlight in this book.

Romance Elements

Swoonworthiness

Only one more hint with Harut.

C’mon… I’m shipping them pretty hard.

Heat

Zilch.

Fantasy Elements

Worldbuilding

I adored the wastelands and learning about the dragon culture. It will be interesting to see if the author expands on this at all in the coming books.

Magic & Magic Systems

One new aspect to the book here in how Kara’s scar might truly mean something. It’s a foreshadow, but I’m here for it.

Writing & Narration

Perfect for the audience. Simple and straightforward writing style. Each character had a distinct voice, and the divide between adults and teens is nicely drawn. Really hits the expectations of YA.

Synopsis

Kara found out the hard way. Just because she did the right thing didn’t mean a god would give his blessing. Instead, it was the opposite when honoring agreements that grate against a god’s wishes.

Now, she is on the run from Odin and anyone following his commands, and she finds herself safe in the wastelands with the wild dragons, or so she thinks. Unless she can find a way to be accepted back into Valkyrie school and not be imprisoned, her future is in peril.

Katrina is an author of several Young Adult and Preteen/Middle Grade novels. Each of her released books reaching the top 100 in certain categories on the Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank – a few even as high as number one.

She resides in Queensland Australia. Her three teen/preteen boys and husband of over fifteen years treat her like a princess. Unfortunately though, this princess still has to do domestic chores.

From birth, she has been a very creative person and has spent many years travelling the world and observing many different personalities and cultures. Her favourite personalities have been the strange ones, yet the ones under the radar also hold a place in her heart.

During her last extensive travels, she spent 16 nights in a bomb shelter on a Kibbutz 8 kilometers off the Lebanese border. It was to avoid Katyusha bombs that the resident volunteers decided to name her after (she is still trying to work out why).

Final notes…
